Spore news

Planned 10 day authentication cycle gone

A couple of days ago, news trickled out that Spore would use the same anti-piracy system as the PC version of Mass Effect. Normally when we hear news of any anti-piracy measures that do not involve the name 'StarForce', we shrug and go on talking about the weather. Not this time.

The proposed anti-piracy system would require players to have an Internet connection and to validate their game every 10 days for as long as the game was installed. The news caused quite a stir among the Spore community. Our forums had multiple threads on this topic, including one that linked to an online petition to have the system removed.

Fortunately, EA is paying attention to their fans and announced that the copy protection scheme would be altered. A mail was sent out, explaining:

We wanted to let you know that we've been hearing your concerns about the online authentication mentioned earlier this week. I didn't want to head into the weekend without getting back to you with some information about how Spore is planning on using this new system.

A few things we wanted you to know:
  • We authenticate your game online when you install and launch it the first time.
  • We'll re-authenticate when a player uses online features, downloads new content or a patch for their game.
  • The new system means you don't have to play with the disc in your computer. And if you are like me, always losing discs, this will be a huge benefit.
  • You'll still be able to install and play on multiple computers.
  • You can play offline.

I guess petitions work. :)

I like the idea of playing Spore without the game disc. That means I can install spore everywhere I go and I can let my family members enjoy the goodness of Spore :D

My issue with securom has nothing to do with the 10 day authentication cycle. I never believed in that since the game is supposedly quite playable offline.

What I don't like is that securom is more or less a rootkit, and it messes peoples computers AND gameplay up! AND it does not go away if you uninstall the game. You can't get rid of it.

How are they handeling THAT issue? If there is securom on it, I will not buy it.

Roland - May 13th, 2008 - 04:17
Hail,

I've been down the path of Securom before with massive problems. I'd like to know what the game will be like for Mac uses, as I'm looking at switching to mac rather then sticking with my old PC.

Heather - May 13th, 2008 - 14:52
Not good enough. I'm not paying for a game which will mess with my computer and send information to a server without me knowing what information is being sent. More to the point, I'm not having a game I paid for stop working because my Internet connection fails or the validation server is down. When I pay to buy games, I give money to own them, not rent them, thanks.
EA clearly don't want my money, so they won't have it. Simple as.
rogelio11: Only 3 installations are allowed per serial.

Roland - May 13th, 2008 - 16:51
Heather, are you telling us the truth. "Only 3 installations" I hate haveing games on my computer all the time, the reason I don't play HL2 any more is because of steam and have a 10GB game on my system.

With Spore we also have this same problem, if we are downloading these creatures which send small but unpack on your system at arond 2.5mb thats going to start clogging your system.

Where do I find out more about this?

I'm all for making sure people don't download your game but for the people that do wanna put hard cash we shouldn't have to suffer.

Draugo - May 14th, 2008 - 05:15
Roland: From what they have told us the creatures won't unpack as such after they have been sent to your computer. The algorithms are so small that they are actually stored inside a png image of that sma creature (at least this is what I understood from the tech videos a while ago), so when you send stuff between your computer and the server or when you create stuff on your Spore everything is saved to your computer in the form of png images.
Unfortunately all info at the moment points to that "only 3 installs per key" being true and as such I agree with Heather and will not spend my money on EA since they clearly don't want it.

Lios - May 14th, 2008 - 07:26
Those 3 installs... Will that also mean I can't re-install more then a few times when I format my harddrive, clean up my pc or buy a new one? I'll most certainly will be installing a game more then 3 times over the course of me playing it, so I'd like to know if that is possible hmpf

Lex - May 14th, 2008 - 08:55
Maybe if you all wait until this information is actually released rather than pointless speculation?

the sodomizer - May 14th, 2008 - 17:34
lex...thank you for giving these nay-sayers and maker-uppers some sensewink

Cody - May 14th, 2008 - 17:55
Rootkit does introduce some interesting problems, but Maxis has never released software (to my knowledge) that has hindered game-play or computer function, so I don't see why they would start now, at the moment that will define the future of their corporation. Furthermore, Maxis wants people to play their games for an extended period of time, hence their love of expansion packs, so I doubt they would knowingly release a game that would stop working in time. After all, it'd be hard to sell expansions when you have to bank on the hope that people will rebuy a game that already stopped working for them just to play an upgraded version.

It's wonderful how some prick from Mass Effect PC can run his mouth about stuff he undoubtedly knows little to nothing about and start a shit storm. Praise the marvels of internet media.

- May 15th, 2008 - 01:21
Cody: Sometime has got to be the first. And it was not Maxis idea. It was all EA.

Draugo - May 15th, 2008 - 14:06
And to be correct, there's no Maxis anymore. They are now part of EA so now even more than before EA makes the decisions on the final product

Heather - May 18th, 2008 - 14:28
They *have* said there will be "three installations" allowed, but what they *haven't* specified is exactly what this means. It may be the case that you can reinstall it over and over on the same computer, and provided you don't upgrade your hardware (or possibly your OS - I'm thinking about how iTunes works here) it will still count as one installation. To be honest though, even that just isn't good enough. In the last 10 years I have owned 4 computers and used a total of (I think) eight at various times. I don't want to feel like I have to hesitate to install a game in case I have to get a new serial again. The only thing that would make this thing okay is if you could "reset" your authentications (as you can in iTunes).
